Ultimate Fighter 13 Preview:
Brock Lesnar
Lesnar will undoubtedly drive the ratings through the roof this season considering the following he has from professional wrestling, as well as being a former UFC champion. From a marketing standpoint it was a great move on behalf of the UFC and Spike TV for convincing the oversized star to do the show, but from a coaching aspect, I will not be surprised to see some of Lesnar’s team members leery of his adequacy to coach them.
Lesnar does bring a lot of positive attributes to the show, being a former champ, his wrestling pedigree that left him with a college record totaling 106 wins and a mere five losses and fighting at the highest level in MMA. The University of Minnesota wrestler has also fought through adversity and came back to win during his scrap with Shane Carwin and has beat a legend in Randy Couture, but what he does lack is stand-up striking ability.
Along with teaching there is a give and take relationship, and if the teacher does not want to teach or the student does not want to learn, then the progression will be nil. Luckily, Lesnar has already stated that he brought in assistant coaches to help in the realm of striking, such as Sifu Greg Nelson, and for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Gracie BJJ black-belt Rodrigo Medeiros.
In the end, a lot can be learned from a guy like Lesnar, but if his students do not respect him as a coach the chemistry will not flow in the gym, resulting in catastrophe. However, if the teammates can get past Lesnar’s public persona and soak up some knowledge from the behemoth of a man, they will exit the show much better fighters than when they entered.
Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos
Dos Santos is a rather large man himself, tipping the scales at 240 pounds, but his standout feature is the furthest thing from wrestling. “Cigano” hits people and if they are not dead, they wished they were. Dos Santos is a generally all around good mixed martial artists, and even though his strength lies in his hands, his ability to grapple is competent as well.
JDS was not asked to be a part of the show to carry the ratings as Lesnar was, the Brazilian’s role will be to drive his own stock through the roof, which again will benefit the UFC in the end.
Dos Santos’ students, one can assume, will be pleased to learn from a guy who has won all six of his UFC fights, with all but one of those wins ending in decisive knockouts. “Cigano” sports a 12-1 career record and he trains with the distinguished Black House team that also houses Anderson Silva, the Nogueira brothers and Jose Aldo. I cannot imagine why someone would not want to be on Team Dos Santos. JDS will unquestionably enhance his students skills due to the experience he has and the respect they will show him from the get go, plus the fact that Dos Santos will most likely bring in some of his aforementioned teammates. I would say that it is a good assumption anyone in the house will get giddy to spend a day training with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
All in all, Dos Santos’ team should not have too many issues unless they are internal, because his practices will be productive and the famous fighters he can bring in to help at any given time will keep his students excited to be there.
The Fighters
The Ultimate Fighter 13 will be a season showcasing 14 welterweights with no elimination round to get into the house. The losers of the first round will go into a wildcard draw to see who competes as the eighth fighter in the quarterfinals. The cast has been announced and there are no standout favorites at this point.
The TUF 13 Fighters
The group of fighters is composed of Nordin Asrih (15-6-1), Wolfslair Academy fighter Michael “Mick” Bowman (7-2), Keon Caldwell (8-1), Team Lloyd Irvin fighter Zach Davis (4-1), Tony Ferguson (10-2), Clay Harvison (6-1), undefeated King of the Cage veteran Myles Jury (9-0), MFC veteran Ryan McGillivray (11-4-1), Ramsey Nijem (4-0), Bellator veteran Charlie Rader (15-4), Team Tompkins fighter Javier Torres (3-0) and Strikeforce veterans Shamar Bailey (10-3), Len Bentley (9-4) and Chris Cope (4-1). Bentley will provide insight into the season as MMA DieHards’ TUF blogger.
The first few episodes will more than likely start to show who shines on each team and who has a long ways to go, there will also probably be the token loud-mouth alcoholic that wants to fight everyone in the house, along with a few charismatic fellows that make the show humorous.
