Bellator Fighting Championships 40 preview :
NON-TITLE WELTERWEIGHT BOUT:
Champion Ben “Funky” Askren (7-0) vs. Nick “The Goat” Thompson (38-13-1): Askren enters as the Bellator Welterweight Champion and boasting an unblemished record. Funky captured the title with an impressive five round beat down of the very tough Lyman Good last October. Askren has ridden his world class wrestling to the pinnacle of the Bellator welterweight division and now faces a stern test in veteran Nick Thompson who will own a decided advantage in experience. Thompson has fought all over the globe and has victories over some of the top names in the sport. The Goat will be looking to rebound from a current three fight losing streak against some top competition.
Askren has proven that his wrestling along with top control and effective ground strikes is a recipe for success in the Bellator welterweight division. Thompson is a savvy veteran and could pull off a submission just on experience alone but not against a wrestler with the submission awareness of Askren. Look for Funky to follow his script of taking down his opponents and grinding on them from bell to bell. This time it will be a three round mauling of Thompson on his way to another unanimous decision win.
Askren over Thompson by unanimous decision.
WELTERWEIGHT TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL:
Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron (20-4) vs. Brent Weedman (18-5-1): Hieron is a well-traveled veteran with experience in many of the top organizations including the UFC. The Xtreme Couture member has picked up eight straight victories including a rear naked choke win over Anthony Lapsley in the quarter-finals of the welterweight tourney. Weedman scored the biggest upset of the opening round when he upset tourney favorite Dan Hornbuckle via unanimous decision. Weedman has picked up ten straight wins including four in the Bellator cage.
Weedman has been on a serious roll and his victory over the highly-regarded Hornbuckle proved he was for real but Hieron brings a different set of challenges. Look for an action packed fight with Hieron just a half a step ahead of Weedman in all areas. It is likely the fight of the night and Hieron will advance to the finals against Rick Hawn with a close but unanimous decision over a tough Weedman.
Hieron over Weedman by unanimous decision.
LIGHTWEIGHT TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL:
Michael Chandler (6-0) vs. Lloyd “Cupcake” Woodard (11-0): Chandler is another Xtreme Couture fighter looking to become a tournament finalist. Chandler has utilized his power and wrestling to amass an undefeated record and most recently choked Marcin Held to sleep in the lightweight quarter finals. Woodard has an awful nickname for a fighter but he always comes to fight as evidenced by the undefeated mark. Woodard picked up an impressive knockout over Carey Vanier in the quarter-finals.
